O2テレフォニカ（テレフォニカドイツ）とAWSは2024年11月28日、O2テレフォニカのモバイルネットワークに量子技術を統合し、パフォーマンスの改善や新たなデータセキュリティ標準を模索する試験的な取り組みを行っていると発表した。クラウド環境で複数の量子技術をテストする世界初の試みだという。
このプロジェクトでは、O2テレフォニカとTelefónica SA、AWS、Telefónica Tech、マドリード工科大学らが協力。モバイルタワーの最適な配置を計算し、量子暗号でネットワークを保護する方法を研究する予定で、これらの知見を将来の6G技術開発に役立てる狙いだという。
O2テレフォニカは今年5月、約100万人の5G顧客をAWSクラウドに移行する計画を発表。今後12〜18カ月で、300万〜400万人の顧客をAWSに移行するロードマップも明かしていた。
AWSのコアネットワーキング担当VPを務めるMatt Rehder氏は「量子技術は、通信網を変革し、セキュリティを強化し、インフラを最適化し、新たな能力を引き出す可能性を秘めている」とし、「当社はO2テレフォニカのような通信事業者や主要な学術機関と密接に協力することで、最先端の研究を実用的なソリューションに変えようとしている」とコメントしている。
